Rotary Youth Exchange
Reno Sunrise is an active participant in the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. Each year the Club sponsors a local high school student’s year long exchange in another country. And each year the Club takes in a high school student from another country. Currently Reno Sunrise is hosting Alexandra Merrick from Australia.
RYE students attend their local high school and live with local families. By doing so they learn the language and culture of their host country. And at the same time they help to promote goodwill between two countries. The RYE program is open to any high school student. To contact a Reno Sunrise Rotarian about the RYE program, e-mail: info@renosunrise.org. And take a look at the District 5190 RYE program’s website at www.rye5190.org.
RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards)
Leadership, Citizenship, Personal Development
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive training program for community youth leaders. Young people chosen for their leadership potential attend an all-expenses-paid seminar, camp, or workshop to discuss leadership skills and to learn those skills through practice. Check out RYLA at www.Camp-RYLA.org or send an email to Committee@Camp-RYLA.org
RYLA’s Core Curriculum
Every RYLA includes the following topics:
- Fundamentals of leadership
- Ethics of positive leadership
- Importance of communication skills in effective leadership
- Problem-solving and conflict management
- Rotary’s purpose and service to the community
- Building self confidence and self-esteem
- Elements of community and global citizenship
- Officially adopted by Rotary International in 1971, RYLA is one of the most significant and fastest-growing programs of Rotary service. Each year, thousands of young people take part in the program worldwide. The impact spreads further as the program influences other young people, and RYLA programs often lead to the formation or strengthening of Rotaract and Interact clubs.
RYLA aims to:
- Demonstrate Rotary’s respect and concern for youth;
- Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders;
- Encourage leadership of youth by youth;
- Recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities.

Virginia Palmer Elementary School
Reno Sunrise has partnered with Virginia Palmer Elementary School in Sun Valley. The Club provides shoes and jackets for students in need. Club members have donated time and materials to provide for better drainage in a school playground and plant trees (photos). Club members work with second grade students to help them improve their reading skills. The club takes a group of students shopping twice a year, and donates shoes and socks to the school.
