Erik Endacott of Rotary Club of Fallon gave us a Zoom presentation about the Green Sahel Project. We hope to participate as a financial supporter with addition of district grant funds. The Green Sahel project proposes to aggressively plant approximately 16,000 fruit trees per year along the Sahel boarder in Northern Senegal, in addition to teaching permaculture. We had some technical difficulties with the audio, so Erik let me know that his main points were: A. The permaculture techniques taught to farmers are meant to sustainably restore fertility to their soils and to increase their yields while saving them vast amounts of money. B. I have done a lot of traveling in West Africa, and have seen numerous NGO projects where money was dumped into it and yet 5 years later they had fallen apart. But when I came across VNGPS, I saw that what they were doing was more sustainable than what other NGOs do, mainly because of their community involvement. |
