Mike Wurm is the President & CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of the Truckee Meadows, established in 1976. Their mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. He provided numerous examples of their impact and provided a view of where they seek to grow in order to help more of our regions youth.
Carolyn Abend, Charlie Fettig, and Dan Waters were our club volunteers for our club's Happy Feet program. Through their efforts we were able to obtain 48 pairs of shoes, 9 pair of girl's socks, 4 pair of boys sock's, 15 pair of boy's underwear, and 12 pair of girl's underwear. These items will be provided to students in need at Virginia Palmer Elementary School.
As I mentioned at Friday's meeting food insecurity is a reality in our community. At our next 3 meetings we will be collecting food to be given to a local food pantry or food bank. Members are encouraged to bring food donations for this Rotary food drive. Donated food needs to meet these requirements:
Protein: Peanut Butter, Tuna, Salmon, Chicken, Dried or Canned Beans
Grains: Whole Grain Cereal, Oatmeal, Brown Rice, Whole Grain Pasta
Fruits: Canned (Packed in 100% Juice or Light Syrup), Dried Fruit, Applesauce (No Sugar Added), 100% Fruit Juice Boxes
Vegetables: Canned (No Salt Added and/or Low-Sodium Preferred)
Dairy: Shelf Stable Milk
Baby Products: Formula, Infant Cereal, Baby Food
Please note – food items donated through food drives should be non-perishable and non-expired. Please DO NOT donate home-made food, food in glass containers, or any food that has been opened or is unlabeled.
I am lucky enough to visit, for the second time in my life, probably my favorite building on the planet, the Mezquita in Cordoba, Spain. If you don't know it, it's a unique place that has been in existence since Roman times, and has been a large mosque AND a cathedral. Most of the building structure was built when the Moors (Muslims) ruled southern Spain but peacefully incorporated the Christian and Jewish communities. Oh for such times again. While here, I also had a fascinating conversation with the apartment manager, a young man who had left Ukraine just days before the invasion. Fascinating. See you all in mid March.
