Alzheimer's Association

Today we heard from the Alzheimer's Association. Niki Rubarth is the Regional Director for the Northern Nevada.  While Alzheimer's can strike anyone, it is more prevalent in women, and in Black and Hispanic Americans.  Researchers are looking at why this is.

Over the past few years there have been some advancements in diagnoses and treatment of Alzheimer's including a blood test and infusion drugs that can slow the progression.

Niki pointed out that there are a number of factors that can impact brain health including being a non-smoker, eating healthy foods, sleeping well, controlling blood pressure and challenging your mind.

The Alzheimer's Association offers a number of services in Northern Nevada including a 24/7 helpline (800-272-3900), providing educational programs and support programs, and referrals for memory care, and respite care.

Niki also promoted the Walk to End Alzheimer's which is on October 18th at the Sparks Marina.
