Nick Connell's Background Story
Our new member Nick Connell gave the club a little personal background.  He moved to Reno from the East Bay in 2013 and presently works for LP Insurance helping employers set up their employee medical and dental benefit plans.  His background is banking and finance.  He has always been active in sports and likes to snowboard in the winter months and race motocross in the warmer times of the year.  He has also been a member of Toastmasters International for 3 years and enjoys learning all of the nuances of public speaking.  He is engaged and looks forward to getting married later this year.  Welcome Nick!
Last Week's Speaker - Mark Pingle
Mark Pingle, Professor of Economics at University of Nevada, gave a thought-provoking presentation on Rational vs. Irrational Economic Decisions.  I found his discussions on behavioral economics enlightening.  New terms such as Status Quo Bias, Loss Aversion, Endowment Effect, Certainty Effect, Present Bias, Positive and Negative Reciprocity and the effects of Ambiguity on the decision making process were explained with commonly encountered scenarios in public and private life.  For example when explaining the Certainty Effect he used a scene from the movie "Dumb and Dumber" where Lloyd Christmas, played by Jim Carrey, asks Mary Swanson if he might have a one in a thousand chance with her.  When she told him it was more like one in a million he exclaimed, "So you say there is a chance!"
Our New Home
After careful consideration of several venues for our future meetings, the Board of Directors approved Swill Coffee & Wine at 3366 Lakeside Ct. in Reno starting in July 2022.
Swill Coffee & Wine has ample parking, a comfortable meeting area and a cheery ambiance perfect for a breakfast club.  Members should try to arrive between 7:00 to 7:10 am to place their orders prior to the official start of the meeting at 7:30 am.  You may order beverages including coffee, lattes, espresso, teas, juice, and soda as well as light breakfast fare such as breakfast burritos, bagels with cream cheese, quiches, and breakfast breads.   The meeting room has a 70" display in the back corner which we will use for our presentations and we will have a small portable PA system to make sure everyone can hear well.

They did specify the following rules:
1. Do not rearrange the furniture.
2. Do not bring in your own food.
3. And request assistance for connecting a computer to the display TV.

There is additional good news!  There will be NO additional fee for members or their guests to attend our meetings, however voluntary donations to the club will always be gladly accepted.  As a result of increased public exposure at this establishment, I anticipate more interest in Rotary and with that an increase in membership.  So please reach out to your colleagues, friends and family who you think might make a good Rotarian and bring them along for the fun.  Our first meeting at the venue will be on July 8, 2022.

Entrance with additional parking across the street in shopping mall.
Upon arrival at 7:00 to 7:10, place your orders and then find a seat in the meeting room area.

Club Leadership Assembly
This past weekend Jon Greene, Shawn Stoddard, Carolyn Abend, and Craig Sande attended the District 5190 Club Leadership Assembly.  It was well attended with excellent instructors.  The information gleaned will help us make our club even more effective in the future.  Please consider attending next year, regardless of club leadership position, and learn more about Rotary and ways to provide service locally and internationally.
