While some Rotarians are involved in youth programs, such as scouting, Rotary Youth Exchange, Interact, or RYLA, other Rotarians who are not involved in a youth program will have youth contact from time to time. For example, there may be middle school students at a club meeting who will be talking about their Rotary Eighth Grade Leadership experience. Or a Rotary club has a hands on service project and there are youth helping with the project. Under the new Rotary Youth Protection Program there are different levels of training and vetting depending on the youth program. A Rotarian who has no direct youth contact will asked to complete an online Youth Protection Awareness training module. However, a Rotarian who is working with Rotary Youth Exchange or with RYLA will need to complete a volunteer application, have reference checks, have a criminal background check, and complete additional training. The Reno Sunrise Board discussed the implementation of the new Youth Protection Program and made the decision to move forward with asking all members to complete the online Youth Protection Awareness training. Jon Greene (who is currently serving as the D5190 interim District Youth Protection Officer) will be the club Youth Protection Officer. Part of the new youth protection program is the district wide use of the Youth Volunteer Management (YVM) platform. This program is a proprietary program for Rotary Districts. Within the next 10 days all members of Reno Sunrise Rotary will receive an email with a link to the online training. The link will come from training@nayen.org. The training takes about 45 minutes. When a Rotarian completes the online training, the Rotarian’s YVM record is marked “training completed”.
