Last Speaker - Wen Chen on China
Our speaker on June 10th was Wen Chen, who immigrated from China and obtained a Ph.D. in Biology from Cal Tech and informed us about China's Human Rights issues.
After she arrived in the U.S.A. she had the belief that the Tiananmen Square Event was the result of students attacking soldiers.  When she was given access to independent photographs, first-hand reports and videos of the event she realized how strongly the Chinese Communist Party controls the news narrative provided to their population.  We also learned how the CCP cracked down on Falun Gong, a popular and growing mind-body meditation technique movement, and subjected some of them to forced organ harvesting.  In addition, we learned that companies like CISCO and YAHOO helped in the information control in China by building the Great Firewall and turning over personal emails to the government.  It was eye-opening talk about the power China has over companies wanting to business in that country, the control over their populace, and the human right abuses.

Rotarians at Work - Food Bank of Northern Nevada
A total of 14 Reno Sunrise Rotarians and partners spent 2 hours Saturday June 11 at the Food Bank of Northern Nevada.

We sorted and organized food that was donated through the annual Unites States Postal Service Food Drive.  It was both interesting and rewarding, as we made sure that the food was not expired and was properly packaged.  It was a special feeling to know that we helped those in our community with food insecurity.

Greene's Attend the Rotary International Convention 2022
Jon and Martha attended the Rotary International Convention held in Houston, Texas June 4-8, 2022.
Jon reported that attendance was down to 11,000 (normally 25,000 to 30.000).  Mostly absent were Rotarians from other countries.  There was a lot of energy, excellent sessions, and good news about growing membership numbers.  Martha added the important point that Rotary evolves.  We can't relay on the approach "we always do it this way", but need to innovate and change with the times.  Rotary is doing that with hybrid and e-club meetings.

Reno-Sparks Rotary Social Gathering on June 16
Gayle Sherman, President-Elect for the Rotary Club of Reno has invited us to attend a free social event.  The Rotary Club of Reno is gathering all the clubs in the Reno-Sparks area at the Depot Craft Brewery and Distillery, 325. E. 4th Street, Reno this Thursday, June 16, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. for no-host appetizers and drinks. It has just been too long since we have had the opportunity to see one another to just visit.   Members are encouraged to attend.  This will likely be a monthly event going forward.
Harvey's Birthday
We were ready to give a celebratory cheer to Harvey Miller, but he wasn't present for our June 10 meeting.  I called him later that day and was informed he had a few business-related hiccups he had to fix, but intends to be making more meetings in the near future.  Happy Birthday Harvey!
