This morning we heard about the Northern Nevada Chapter of the American Red Cross from Bridget Posson, the Executive Director.
|
The chapter covers the counties in Northern Nevada with a paid staff of 5. Volunteers make up about 90% of Red Cross staff, and like many other volunteer driven organizations they are always looking for more volunteers. One of the main areas of focus for the Northern Nevada Chapter is disaster preparedness and response. Since July 1st the Red Cross has responded to 92 home fires. And they have operated shelters a number of shelters during wild fires. When a government agency notifies the Red Cross of a disaster shelter location, it is the goal of the Red Cross to have that shelter staffed with in 2 hours. The Northern Nevada Chapter is one of the few Red Cross chapters in the United States that does not operate a blood bank, however they work closely with Vitalant, the local blood bank. They also will install smoke alarms in homes, talk to those living in the homes about fire safety, including fire evacuation plans. And the Red Cross has programing for schools.
