Our speakers last Friday were two detectives from the Regional Human Trafficking and Explotation Unit (HEAT). The HEAT unit has 7 officers from 7 local and federal law enforcement agencies. The unit deals with street prostitution, human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and related crimes. They have recovered girls as young as 12 years old. Along with arresting individuals who are involved in the illegal sex trade, they work with the victims and help them to move in a different life direction. In 20 minutes we were given an overview of a very complex problem.

 

As a follow-up to the presentation given on Amateur Radio by Shawn Stoddard and me on January 5, I thought it would be nice to provide an example of how some folks enjoy the hobby.  Last week a group of us climbed Captain Pomin Rock overlooking Lake Tahoe and set up portable radio stations to "activate" the site.  This is an activity called Summits On The Air (SOTA).  It is a fun way to combine the joys of hiking with ham radio.  Communicating with Morse code and a 5 watt transmitter, Craig was able to reach hams throughout the United States as well as one in France.

 

 

 

We are not having a club meeting this Friday morning (except for the Purple Parrot informal get together group).  The monthly club social will be held at the Bellville Wine Bar at 400 West 5th Street, Suite 101, starting at 4 p.m.  We look forward to seeing everyone there!

The Reno Sunrise Rotary Elysian Fishing Trip January 12-15, 2024 was another success for young and old alike. This annual Rotarian event has been going on for almost 15 years. This latest adventure drilling through the ice resulted in a catch of 49 fish in about three hours and three days of fun and food in Ely, including a wonderful fireworks show on two of the nights. Maybe next year we can add the night ride on the Fireworks Train that goes through town while shooting off their fireworks.
