The program was presented by Elena Larson and Claire McHenry from the Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation.
The TMPF works with the cities of Reno and Sparks, and Washoe County to make the almost 200 parks in the Truckee Meadows accessible to all. They also provide activities at parks, and funding for park improvements. Along with working with existing parks, TMPF is also working to create and improve existing nature study areas.
Elena pointed out that people who spend time outdoors are happier, healthier, and more creative than people who do not spend time outdoors. To this end the TMPF has programs for children that are held both at schools and at parks, including school vacation camps.
One of the major projects of the TMPF is the creation of the Rosewood Nature Study Area which is located on both sides of Veterans Parkway and is the site of the former Rosewood Golf Course. The Rosewood Nature Study Area has been returned to the original wetlands with the addition of almost 3 miles of trails. There is also an interpretive center. Phase 2 of the project is about 50% funded.
