Lt. Col. Donny Crandell, wing chaplain with the Nevada Army National Guard, was fortunate to have been deployed to Antartica for 6 weeks and discussed his fascinating adventure.

It takes 8 hours on a C130 to reach McMurdo Station from Christchurch, New Zealand.  While there he also visited the South Pole, a 3-hour flight.

The population of McMurdo Station is around 800 during the austral summer, but only 100 in winter.  During his time there temperatures ranged from highs near 0 degrees F. and lows down to -10 to -20 degrees F.  The sun remained visible 24-7.

One special event held at McMurdo Station is Icestock (their version of Woodstock) where everyone forms bands and performs into the evening.  It sounds like a exciting adventure that few get to experience.

It was fascinating to hear about Lt. Col. Crandell's adventures in Antartica.
